Organic Chemistry IOnline Distance Organic Chemistry I is designed to meet the organic chemistry prerequisite for students who are applying for admission to health profession programs. Most students will have an undergraduate degree and will be in the process of a career change. The course is a one semester course with a virtual laboratory that emphasizes those aspects of organic chemistry that are relevant to the study of human health and metabolism. Whenever possible, correlations to medicine, health and disease will be made. Prerequisite(s): College level introductory chemistry. To give the student interested in the health professions an introduction to organic chemistry emphasizing the concepts that will be important for and provide the basis for the subjects the student will encounter in his professional studies. These subjects include biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology and pharmacology. The typical student will complete the course in approximately 16 weeks. Students may enroll at any time and the course begins on the date of enrollment. Tuition is $940 for this four-credit course. The lab fee for this course, which includes registration, books, software for the virtual laboratory and technology access is $250. For more information about the course, call Dr. David Manyan at 207-602-2336, or email at dmanyan@une.edu. Click here to review the course syllabus.
Organic Chemistry IIOnline Distance Organic Chemistry II is a one semester course with a virtual laboratory designed for individuals with a baccalaureate degree who need second semester organic chemistry as a prerequisite to apply for admission to health professions' programs. These may include graduate programs in medicine, veterinary medicine, dental medicine, nursing, physical therapy, and physician assistant. Prerequisite(s): College level introductory chemistry and one semester of organic chemistry. The goals of this course are divided into two major topics: The first goal is to introduce the student to important laboratory techniques and concepts covered on most professional entrance exams. These include separation and purification techniques and an introductory to spectroscopy. This will make up the first 6 modules of the course and will include one laboratory assignment. The second goal is to give the student interested in the health professions an introduction to the organic chemistry of important biological pathways that the student will encounter in his/her professional studies. The subjects include biochemistry, molecular genetics, and metabolism. This will make up the remaining 8 modules and will include 7 laboratory assignments. Since this is the second of two semesters in this series, it will be assumed that the student taking this course has a good understanding of the different functional groups in organic chemistry and of the different reactions these functional groups undergo. The typical student will complete the course in approximately 16 weeks. Students may enroll at any time and the course begins on the date of enrollment. Tuition is $940 for this four-credit course. The lab fee for this course, which includes registration, books, software for the virtual laboratory and technology access is $250.
